Gathering the Tools Groups
Registration is CLOSED for the Spring 2009 Gathering the Tools Group.
The excavation of Emory’s history involving race began in Spring 2006 through a working group called Gathering the Tools. The Tools Group seeks to create a common record of race at Emory from the founding in 1836 to the realities of the present. Meeting on a similar schedule to the Community Dialogue Groups, participants read short selections from Emory's history. But much of the work focuses on developing basic tools to help those interested in Emory's racial heritage to engage in historical research. Members learn to conduct archival research and oral history interviews in order to complete individual or small group projects.
Gathering the Tools participants sometimes enter the session with a project in mind, yet this is not a requirement for membership. Sample project ideas include theatrical compositions, public art displays of Emory’s founding history, oral history collections from retiring staff and written explorations of Emory’s integration period.
